Philadelphia’s first federal death penalty case in years ended in a mistrial after the second of three defendants pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy charges in exchange for a life sentence.

With the two co-defendants absent from the proceedings, the jury could show bias against the last man, 34-year-old Victor Rodriguez, U.S. District Judge Louis H. Pollak ruled Monday.
