The overriding goal of the support laws is to ensure that children of divorced, separated or unmarried parents are treated the same as children of intact families. However, in its efforts to ensure equal treatment of children under the law, the courts often impose greater obligations on divorced, separated or unmarried parents than on parents of intact families.

This point can best be illustrated in the recent Superior Court opinion of Portugal v. Portugal, decided May 1. The opinion was written by Judge Michael T. Joyce and was decided by a panel of the Superior Court (Judges Kate Ford Elliot and Phyllis W. Beck also sat on the panel). The case was appealed from Chester County.
