Illuminare, one of the newest restaurants to arrive in the art museum area, could hang up its apron and simply charge admission for a tour: Owner Brian Augustine overlooked nothing in building a creation that was seven years in the making.

A copper-topped, blazing gas oven sits behind an eight-seat bar that wraps around the tiny front dining room. Wooden stairs lead to the main, wood-trimmed room, decorated with gently swirling fans and a fireplace. Slate floors are throughout. The adjacent courtyard is complete with slate walls, an illuminated, ancient tree and a bubbling fountain. Even the bathrooms, with their 15-foot ceilings and granite counters, are something to stare at.
