U.S. Circuit Judge Carol Los Mansmann, the first woman appointed to the federal bench in Pittsburgh and the second woman appointed to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals where she served nearly 17 years, died Saturday after a long battle with cancer. She was 59.

“We took for granted that she was indestructible,” Chief U.S. Circuit Judge Edward R. Becker said yesterday.
