Gary Stein, the last link to the renowned and at times controversial New Jersey Supreme Court once led by former Chief Justice Robert Wilentz will step down Sept. 1, nine months before his mandatory retirement date.

Stein, the most frequent dissenter on the Wilentz court, who announced his resignation last Wednesday. He is the only remaining justice not appointed by Gov. Christine Todd Whitman. The vacancy presents Gov. James McGreevey with an early opportunity to begin reshaping the court, though the governor said last week that he had as yet no nominee in mind.
