Pennsylvania’s retired chief justice, John Paul Flaherty, will no longer hear or decide important cases, but as chief justice emeritus in charge of legal education, he will continue to have an impact.

But friends and colleagues, who described him as an intellectual and a bit of an iconoclast, said he would continue to read all kinds of history, think in Latin, speak in Gaelic and, if the music is right, launch into some Irish step dancing.
