Like most state and local bar associations, the American Bar Association has championed merit selection for judges. But incoming ABA president Alfred P. Carlton has decided to commit much of his energy toward identifying a better way to conduct judicial elections.

Last week, Carlton announced the formation of the blue-ribbon ABA Commission on the 21st Century Judiciary, which will be chaired by Pepper Hamilton partner Edward Madeira Jr. The commission will hold four public hearings beginning next week in Detroit before moving on to Philadelphia on Sept. 26.
