A conservative Utah judicial nominee known for his outspoken opinions assured senators yesterday that he could suppress his personal opinions on issues like abortion and judge fairly on all issues if he is confirmed for a federal appeals court seat.
University of Utah professor Michael McConnell told the Democratic-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee – which already has voted down two appeals court candidates U.S. District Judge Charles Pickering of Mississippi and Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen – that he would be impartial on all issues despite his personal opinions.
