There was a major reshuffling at the top of the Top 100 Largest Law Firms chart this year, as Pepper Hamilton claimed the top spot, leaping from number five to number one by adding 29 attorneys in Pennsylvania, an increase of almost 10 percent over last year. Without any net change at all in the number of Pennsylvania attorneys, Morgan Lewis stepped up to number two, leaving the number three spot open for Reed Smith, the number one firm in last year’s ranking.
Most of the reshuffling at the top of the chart was the result, not of extensive growth in the largest firms in Pennsylvania, but of some shrinkage of the firms that lost ground in the rankings. In fact, while Pepper Hamilton did grow significantly, with 323 Pa.-based attorneys, the firm has almost 20 fewer attorneys than last’s year’s number one firm, Reed Smith.
