After serving 18 years of a life prison sentence for first-degree murder, Thomas McCandless walked out of prison a free man after a federal judge ruled that Pennsylvania was simply taking too long to give him a court-ordered retrial.

In July, U.S. District Judge Herbert J. Hutton said he gave the Commonwealth a 120-day period to retry McCandless and that the window of opportunity expired on Nov. 29.
