SAN FRANCISCO—In a decision that could affect the way companies do business in California, a Ninth Circuit panel ruled on Thursday that jury trial waivers in contracts signed under California law hold little weight in federal court.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that California’s tight restrictions on such waivers should trump the federal rule permitting them so long as they are entered voluntarily and knowingly.
