Six large law firms based in the Bay Area landed on this year's Am Law 100 list, but only two of them saw gross revenue growth during 2016.

Cooley led the pack with $974 million in gross revenue, coming in at No. 30 in the rankings, two spots ahead of its position for 2015. In a February interview, the firm's CEO Joseph Conroy attributed Cooley's strong performance last year to its core practice areas of life sciences, technology and venture capital. The firm also saw gross revenue rise 4.2 percent, to $1.965 million, despite a drop-off in transactional activity during the first half of 2016.

Technology practices were a bright spot at other local firms, according to the leaders of Morrison & Foerster (No. 31 on the Am Law 100 list, with $945 million in gross revenue); Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (No. 32 at $929 million); Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (No. 45 at $755 million) and Fenwick & West (No. 93 at $361.5 million).
