The Fourth Appellate District granted the People's petition for writ of mandate. The court held that Prop 57 des not apply retroactively to cases already filed in adult court prior to its effective date.

In 2012, Jeremy Walker was charged in adult court with two counts of attempted premeditated murder and one count of active participation in a gang, based on crimes allegedly committed when Walker was 17 years old. A jury found Walker guilty. Various firearm and gang enhancements were also found true, and Walker was sentenced to 80 years to life in prison. The court of appeal subsequently reversed the judgment due to evidentiary error. Before the case was retried, the voters passed Prop 57.
