SAN FRANCISCO — Uber Technologies Inc. lost its push to beat back a request for information about drivers who operate in San Francisco.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard Ulmer Jr. announced at the end of a hearing Thursday morning that he was denying Uber's petition to quash subpoenas from the city treasurer and tax collector, which asked for information about Uber drivers who operated for at least seven days in the city from July 2016 through March 2017.

Lawyers for the city have argued that any driver providing rides in or through the city are required to obtain a business license. Since 2014, city tax officials have periodically requested the names, addresses and license numbers of Uber drivers to investigate whether they comply with and pay applicable taxes. Uber in December stopped providing the city with that information, and in May sued to block the city's latest request citing concerns about driver privacy. The San Francisco City Attorney's Office responded later that month by suing to force Uber to hand over the information.
