SAG-AFTRA's roughly 160,000 members have been asked to authorize their negotiators to call for a strike in an effort by the actors union to jump-start its stalled contract talks with Hollywood movie and television producers.

A walkout could come as early as Friday, when the current three-year deal comes to an end. The Screen Actors Guild national board voted unanimously Sunday to call for the vote after hearing a grim update on the talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which began May 30.

“We have presented reasonable proposals to address the critical concerns facing our members and that are integral to making a living in this industry. The [producers] have failed to move on our most critical issues,” said union president Gabrielle Carteris and national executive direc-tor and lead negotiator David White. “The AMPTP has responded with outrageous rollbacks that cut to the core of our basic terms and conditions.”
