Paul McCartney has settled his legal battle with Sony/ATV over the rights to the songs he wrote while he was a member of the Beatles, and in the process struck a blow for artists' rights.

“The parties have resolved this matter by entering into a confidential settlement agreement and jointly request that the Court enter the enclosed proposed order dismissing the above-referenced action without prejudice,” McCartney's attorney, Michael A. Jacobs of Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco, wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos of the Southern District of New York on Thursday.

No terms were disclosed but the order states that the New York federal court will “enforce the terms of the parties' Settlement Agreement, should a dispute arise.” Neither Jacobs nor Sony attorneys responded to a request for comment.
