Drivers in Solano County, California, who can't pay their traffic fines will be less likely to have their licenses suspended, thanks to a settlement in a pro bono suit filed by Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman and several legal service organizations.

The suit against Solano County Superior Court claimed that drivers who couldn't cough up $35 for changing lanes without signaling could see that fine balloon to $538 due to additional fees and assessments, and that the court illegally failed to inform low-income traffic defendants that they could challenge the fines if they couldn't afford them.

Under the terms of the settlement, the court will notify all recipients of traffic fines that they can request a reduced fee, a payment plan or community service, as long as they demonstrate that they're indigent.
