Drivers in Solano County, California, who can’t pay their traffic fines will be less likely to have their licenses suspended, thanks to a settlement in a pro bono suit filed by Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman and several legal service organizations.

The suit against Solano County Superior Court claimed that drivers who couldn’t cough up $35 for changing lanes without signaling could see that fine balloon to $538 due to additional fees and assessments, and that the court illegally failed to inform low-income traffic defendants that they could challenge the fines if they couldn’t afford them.
