C.A. 2nd;

The Second Appellate District affirmed judgments of conviction. The court held that the defendants' convictions under federal and state law were for distinct offenses, and thus did not raise double jeopardy concerns.

Following a joint human trafficking investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Los Angeles Police Department, the U.S. Attorney's Office charged Astati Halim and Hendra Anwar with harboring illegal aliens. Pursuant to plea agreements, Halim pleaded guilty to misuse of visas, and Anwar pleaded guilty to minimum wage violations. The Los Angeles County District Attorney subsequently prosecuted Halim and Anwar for violating California's anti-trafficking statute. After the trial court denied their motion to dismiss the grand jury indictment, Halim pleaded guilty to one count of human trafficking, and Anwar pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact.
