SAN FRANCISCO — Uber Technologies Inc. on Tuesday sought to wipe out a chunk of Waymo's intellectual property case over self-driving car technology, as the two Silicon Valley rivals race to gear up for trial in October.

The move comes just a week after the company brought on board a team of eight additional lawyers from the Susman Godfrey firm, including New York-based trial attorney William Carmody, to fill out its already large trial team.

Carmody, who leads the Susman team for Uber, will be part of the team presenting at trial for the company, Uber spokeswoman Chelsea Kohler said. “We are pleased to welcome Susman Godfrey to our formidable legal team,” she said in a statement.
