It would be poor form, indeed, to start your judicial career by violating the Government Code by failing to wear a robe during court proceedings. A gavel, however, has all the utility of an inflatable dartboard.

As the above quote from noted legal philosopher, sharp dresser, and Grammy award-winning rapper Wayne Michael Carter Jr. explains, judges are provided two symbols of authority: a robe and a gavel.
Actually, “provided” is a poor choice of words.[1] No one provided them to us. We had to buy them.
