The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium has appointed Google in-house ops leader Mary O'Carroll as its new president.
CLOC, an organization that provides education and networking opportunities for legal operations professionals, announced O'Carroll's appointment Sunday, one day before its annual London Institute is set to kick off.
The organization's founder and now-former chairwoman of the board, Connie Brenton, resigned from CLOC earlier this month, citing “different directions,” including, she said, disagreements over whether to offer law firm membership options. CLOC's release Sunday said one of the organization's tenets is “bringing together the entire legal ecosystem” and that it “intends to accelerate its inclusive and collaborative charter over the coming years.”
“I am honored and humbled to take on the role of President for CLOC,” O'Carroll said in a press release Sunday. “The opportunities are immense for legal operations professionals and we are dedicated to the task of taking CLOC and the legal operations profession to the next level in reforming and shaping our industry.”
O'Carroll has served on CLOC's leadership team since its founding as a nonprofit in January 2016. She is also the director of legal operations, technology and strategy at Google, where she has worked since 2008, according to her LinkedIn profile.
The organization also announced Aine Lyons, the Ireland-based vice president and deputy general counsel of worldwide legal operations at VMware Inc., as its latest board member. CLOC board member Jeff Franke, who led legal ops at the company formerly known as Yahoo Inc., resigned alongside Brenton on Jan. 2.
“I am honoured to serve on the CLOC Board of Directors and to partner with this hard-working, energetic and driven team,” Lyons said in a statement. “Now, more than ever, the legal operations role is a vital component of the modern legal department and is a critical partner to the general counsel. We all have an opportunity, and an obligation, to demonstrate the value that in-house legal teams bring to the bottom line and to transform and grow the businesses that we serve. I believe that CLOC has a strategic role to play in driving increased diversity and innovation across the legal industry, and that its members are integral to that cultural shift.”
CLOC said Sunday that Lyons helped establish and lead its London Institute, which it held for the first time last year. Her LinkedIn profile lists her as the group's Europe lead. The group also said it is actively engaged in evaluating new board members and plans to make more announcements in the coming months.
