Who are the most innovative law firms, legal departments, and legal technology companies in California? The Recorder is seeking nominations from lawyers who have handled cutting edge matters at the intersection of the law and technology.
The California Leaders in Tech Law and Innovation Awards will celebrate the recent achievements of lawyers whose work is focused on tech companies and issues with an eye toward those who are moving the profession forward through innovation. The awards will also continue The Recorder's tradition of honoring the Women Leaders in Tech Law, the go-to women attorneys in California's technology market. Nominees must primarily practice in California.

We are seeking nominations in the following categories:
Tech Litigation Department of the Year
Who are the litigators representing the innovators, entrepreneurs, technology companies, venture capital funds, and start-ups at the center of the California economy? Winners and finalists will be judged based on their four top results. Judging criteria include size and scope of the matters, the novelty of the issues at play, and the quality of advocacy.
Tech Deal Department of the Year – M&A
Recognizing the law firms who handle market-moving mergers and acquisitions, financings, and capital markets deals involving technology companies. Entries will be judged based on the size, scope, and sophistication of three representative deals handled by California-based lawyers.
Start-Up Firm/ Emerging Company Law Firm of the Year
Awards the firms who help clients in the start-up, pre-public and emerging company space navigate significant legal challenges to reach desired business outcomes—anything from securing funding for a significant expansion, to filing papers to go public, to fending off a significant litigation threat. Firms will be evaluated based on their top three start-up emerging company representations handled by California-based lawyers.
Most Innovative Public Company Legal Department of the Year
With an eye toward legal departments that contribute to product development and in-house innovation, this award will honor large company legal teams who have acted as problem solvers within their companies and contributed to the overall innovation culture within their respective companies.
Most Innovative Emerging Company Legal Department of the Year
This award will honor in-house legal teams who have acted as problem solvers within pre-IPO companies based in California and contributed to the overall innovation culture.
Most Innovative Legal Operations Team of the Year
Highlighting the contributions of legal operations both in-house and within law firms, this award will honor those contributing to continued efforts to bring business discipline and technological innovation to the legal industry.
Innovators of the Year
Recognizing individual practitioners who are tackling legal problems creatively. Seeking nominees from law firms, in-house legal departments, the public sector, non-profits, and academia.
Alternative Legal Service Provider of the Year
Recognizing legal service providers outside the realm of traditional law firms for contributions working with technology companies.
Innovations in Pro Bono
Recognizing the firms and in-house legal departments who either through collaboration or use of technology are making an impact in the community through pro bono representation.
Innovations in Diversity and Inclusion
Recognizing successful partnerships between legal industry players that advance women attorneys, lawyers of color and other underrepresented groups. Nominees can be individual firms or companies, or collaborative efforts among groups
Women Leaders in Tech Law
Who are the women lawyers handling game-changing, law-shaping, market moving work in and around the tech sector? We will continue our annual tradition of celebrating the Women Leaders in Tech Law focusing on the top women attorneys whose recent achievements have contributed to progress at technology companies and in the law.

Who Got The Work
Michael G. Bongiorno, Andrew Scott Dulberg and Elizabeth E. Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

Amy O. Bruchs and Kurt F. Ellison of Michael Best & Friedrich have entered appearances for Epic Systems Corp. in a pending employment discrimination lawsuit. The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.

Greenberg Traurig shareholder Joshua L. Raskin has entered an appearance for boohoo.com UK Ltd. in a pending patent infringement lawsuit. The suit, filed Sept. 3 in Texas Eastern District Court by Rozier Hardt McDonough on behalf of Alto Dynamics, asserts five patents related to an online shopping platform. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap, is 2:24-cv-00719, Alto Dynamics, LLC v. boohoo.com UK Limited.
