Continuing its hiring spree in California, DLA Piper has picked up a San Diego partner from Morrison & Foerster with deep ties in the privacy and security space.

After working with Morrison & Foerster for nearly six years, Andrew Serwin officially moved over to DLA Piper's San Diego office Tuesday as a partner in its 150-lawyer data protection group.

“Cyber and privacy, they are the hottest issue globally,” Serwin said. “Companies realize that their brand and trust are locked up in their privacy and security issues, so you have increased regulation, and companies are paying more attention to it.”

Serwin has been practicing San Diego since 1972. He said most of his clients have expanded globally, so he was particularly attracted to DLA Piper's global platform.

“What makes DLA such an attractive platform to me is the depth of resources globally to have the leading experts in virtually any countries you need them, all within the one-stop shop,” Serwin said, whose move to DLA Piper was brokered by legal recruiter Larry Watanabe.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Serwin was a partner in Foley & Lardner's San Diego office. Serwin has represented companies in health care, insurance, social media and technology and defended clients in several enforcement matters before the Federal Trade Commission.

In addition to his practice, Serwin is involved in organizations within the cybersecurity and privacy space, including his service on the board of the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance.

Asked for comment on Serwin's departure, a spokesperson for Morrison & Foerster said in a statement Thursday: “We appreciate Andy's contributions to Morrison & Foerster and wish him well in his new endeavors. The firm remains committed to San Diego's strong litigation practice and to our top ranked nationwide privacy practice.”
