DocuSign, a contract management company that aims, in part, to simplify work for lawyers, has hired a new lawyer of its own.

The San Francisco-based company announced Trâm Phi as its general counsel, corporate secretary and senior vice president Tuesday. Phi will lead the legal affairs and risk management teams, with more than 50 staff, to develop corporate strategy and work with the board of directors.

She replaces DocuSign chief legal officer Reginald Davis, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“My goal is just to partner with the company to help the company get to the next level. To be in lockstep with everyone else in the company because we all have the same goal,” Phi said in an interview.

She learned the importance of “partnering and collaborating with everyone internally” in her previous roles, which total more than 15 years of general counsel experience. Those top lawyer gigs have been at late-stage startups where she's had to help companies “continue to grow in scale,” lessons she'll take with her to DocuSign, which went public last year.

Most recently, Phi served as chief legal officer of Imperva Inc. She spent nearly eight years with the company, according to her LinkedIn profile, and led Imperva through its 2011 initial public offering.

The Redwood Shores, California-based company has not publicly announced a new CLO and did not immediately respond to request for comment. However, like DocuSign, Imperva still has a general counsel, Shulamite White, who was Phi's second-in-command.

Before Imperva, Phi spent more than five years with security and compliance management solutions company ArcSite as general counsel. ArcSite was the first company Phi took public as a general counsel in 2007.

“In our extensive search for a new GC, what stood out about Trâm was her passion for our mission, her experience building high-impact teams, and her firm commitment to collaboration,” said DocuSign chief executive officer Dan Springer, who Phi will report to, in a press release. “I cannot think of anyone more suited to the role, and we're thrilled that she's joining the team.”

Phi began her in-house career at InVision Technologies Inc. as senior vice president and general counsel. She spent seven years as an associate at Fenwick & West after graduating with a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
