The general counsel of PayPal is slated to head the legal department at Discover Financial Services, a spokesperson for the company confirmed Wednesday night.

The spokesperson confirmed Wanji Walcott will become the chief legal officer and general counsel of Discover. The spokesperson said she will begin July 22 and become a member of the executive committee while being based in Riverwoods, Illinois.

The company will not be considering interview requests until Walcott is officially on board at Discover, the spokesperson added. Walcott is taking the place of Kelly McNamara Corley, who retired from Discover after 37 years in January, according to the American Financial Services Association.

“We're excited to leverage her experience launching pro bono and employee network programs as we continue to promote our employee development and diversity and inclusion initiatives,” Discover CEO Roger Hochschild said of Walcott in a statement to Corporate Counsel.

PayPal did not return a request for comment. It is not clear if PayPal has selected an interim or permanent replacement for Walcott. Walcott could not be reached for comment.

Walcott has spent much of her career in-house, according to her LinkedIn profile. She started working at PayPal in 2015 as vice president of legal product and became general counsel of the San Jose, California-based company in 2017. When Walcott became general counsel of PayPal, the company was making partnership deals with Facebook, Apple, Google and the investment app, Acorns. The company was also under investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over its subsidiary Venmo Inc.'s disclosure and transfer policies.

Walcott spent 13 years at American Express, where she served in a variety of roles including senior vice president, managing counsel, chief technology counsel and group counsel. She also worked at DSET, a public startup software company, and at Lockheed Martin IMS Corp., now Xerox. Walcott was also a senior associate at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. She is a graduate of the Howard University School of Law.
