Starting in August, all attorneys at Munger, Tolles & Olson will be able to take 18 weeks of paid parental leave.

The Los Angeles-based firm announced Thursday that it has updated its policy to allow 18 weeks of paid parental leave for both primary and nonprimary caregivers. In addition, birth mothers will receive an additional six to eight weeks of paid disability leave, for a total of up to 26 weeks.

“We wanted to make sure that our policy reflected how attorneys thought about their families and caregiving responsibilities, so having 18 weeks of parental leave that didn't distinguish between 'primary' and 'nonprimary' was important to us,” said partner Rose Leda Ehler, who also served as a co-chair of the firm's parental leave committee.

Prior to updating the policy, Munger Tolles offered 18 weeks of parental leave for primary caregivers and six weeks for nonprimary caregivers.

Parents of new babies can now take their 18 weeks of consecutive paid leave right away, or they can take up to two weeks of leave when the baby is born and save the remainder to use later on. This enables parents to use the bulk of their time off when their spouse or partner's parental leave has run out.

“We have always been a market leader on family benefits,” Ehler said. “So, this is another move consistent with that tradition [of] having a very progressive and generous family leave policy.”

Ehler was one of the newly elected partners at Munger Tolles who took parental leave last year. According to the firm, two more new partners also took parental leave last year—Laura Lin and Kuruvilla Olasa.

In addition to offering its attorneys more parental leave, Munger Tolles also offers a subsidized, on-site childcare center for its employees in Los Angeles. The childcare center, which launched in 2010, is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. More than 70 children between the ages of six weeks and six years are currently enrolled in the program.

Munger Tolles is the latest Big Law firm to revamp its parental leave policy. Last month, Paul Hastings announced that it would expand its paid leave to 14 weeks for its attorneys and staff, plus up to another eight weeks of childbirth recovery for birthing parents.
