Baker McKenzie has welcomed back executive compensation lawyer Jennifer Kirk from Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, where she was most recently the director of global equity management at the internet giant.

Kirk previously practiced at Baker McKenzie from 2001 to 2011. She rejoined Baker McKenzie's San Francisco office on Tuesday as a partner in the firm's employment and compensation group.

"I miss practicing law," Kirk said, explaining that her role at Alphabet for the past eight years focused more finance and operations side of the company's business.

At Alphabet, Kirk managed a team of 13 employees located in the Bay Area and Europe, Middle East and Africa regions. According Baker McKenzie's press release, Kirk was responsible for the operations, administration, education and global compliance of Alphabet's equity-based compensation plans. She also managed the trading operations team for the pre- and post-execution trade life cycle of Alphabet's investment portfolio.

"I loved my time there, and it allowed me to really flex other muscles and experience doing something other than the practice of law," she said. "But at the end of the day, [when thinking about] where my passions were and what type of work I was most excited about, it was the law."

At Baker McKenzie, Kirk will advise clients on the tax and regulatory issues related to the implementation and maintenance of global share plans and other incentive compensation arrangements. She first joined the global firm as an associate in 2001, and was promoted to partner at the firm in 2006.

"Jen is a seasoned compensation practitioner with a focus on global share plans, an area in which our Firm has long been a market leader," Barbara Klementz, managing partner for the California offices and the chair of the firm's compensation group, said in a statement. "She has incredibly strong ties within the share plan industry, and her return to the firm will be a tremendous asset in servicing our clients and continuing to grow our practice."

Baker McKenzie, which has been growing fast on the West Coast, has over 120 attorneys in California across its three offices in San Francisco, Palo Alto and Los Angeles. The firm also recently brought on deal-maker Leif King from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom's Silicon Valley office.
