Tyson & Mendes, a firm that has been on a fast growth trajectory in California, is also expanding on the East Coast.
The California litigation defense firm has hired veteran Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani partner Robert Modica to open a New York office next month, which will be its second office on the East Coast.
Modica will join the firm Monday as the managing partner of the new office. The New York office, which will be located in midtown Manhattan, is set to open Oct. 1, the firm said.
"[Tyson & Mendes] has really presented me with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to open up a new New York office of an emerging firm," Modica said. "I just think that the opportunity is just really too good to pass up."
The New York office is expecting to bring on another team of attorneys in the upcoming weeks. According to Modica, he will have up to three attorneys to start the new location.
"The last 10 years I focused primarily on professional liability commercial litigation, and then more recently, cyber and tech litigation," said Modica, adding that he "fully intends to continue to focus on in those areas" as he builds out Tyson & Mendes' New York presence.
Modica previously served as managing partner of Gordon & Rees' New York office, where he worked for the last 10 years. In his practice, he handles commercial disputes involving intellectual property rights, shareholder derivative claims and technology-based claims arising out of privacy, data and cybersecurity breaches.
"I still enjoy practicing law, and look forward to that," Modica said.
Tyson & Mendes managing partner Robert Tyson said in a statement that his firm has "long wanted to bring our services and unique defense methods to New York."
"We could not have asked for a better partner than Mr. Modica to make that happen," Tyson said. "His experience in cybersecurity and technology litigation will be a great addition to the firm's growing cyber litigation practice area."
Tyson & Mendes opened its first East Coast office in Florida in 2017. It now has a total of 12 offices in states including California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Washington and Florida. The firm has grown to more than 140 attorneys since it was founded in 2011.
"They've built such a good reputation because of the quality of the people that they've brought in," Modica said, "I think that has … permeated throughout the other offices."
In an emailed statement, Gordon & Rees firmwide managing partner Dion Cominos wished Modica the best.
