Los Angeles-based City National Bank announced Monday it has named an experienced in-house finance attorney to be its new executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary.

Michael Speaker, who is based in Los Angeles and began his role earlier this month, oversees the bank's corporate and administrative group. The group is made up of legal, corporate governance, community reinvestment and corporate security. He reports to the bank's CEO, Kelly Coffey, and Royal Bank of Canada's general counsel, David Onorato.

Speaker replaces Jared Wolff, who left City National Bank earlier this year to become the president and CEO of Banc of California, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Speaker said he is excited to be leading the bank's legal department in a statement sent to Corporate Counsel.

"I'm especially excited by what has been accomplished under the leadership of Chairman Russell Goldsmith and now CEO Kelly Coffey's vision for the bank and the potential for even more growth and success through the relationship with Royal Bank of Canada," he said. "I'm also very proud to lead City National's extraordinarily accomplished legal team."

Before joining City National Bank, Speaker served as deputy general counsel and senior vice president at Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati. He has also worked as deputy chief counsel of the office of financial stability in the U.S. Department of the Treasury and as counsel at CapitalSource. Speaker has also held an associate role at McKee Nelson and a counsel role at Ashurst.

"Michael has extensive experience supporting financial institutions, as well as thorough regulatory expertise," Coffey said in the press release. "He will lead the exceptional legal and corporate administrative teams that contribute to City National's growth and stability and help our clients succeed."

City National Bank has $56.2 billion in assets, according to the company, and provides banking, investment and trust services in Southern California, the San Francisco Bay Area, Nevada, New York City, Nashville, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. City National Bank is a subsidiary of Royal Bank of Canada.
