Andrea Lobato, the chief risk officer of Eaze Technologies and an alum of Lyft's regulatory compliance program, has helped create the single largest marketplace and tech platform for the legal access to cannabis products in California, if not the entire United States. Lobato, who is among the 21 lawyers chosen by The Recorder as Women Leaders in Tech Law as part of this year's California Leaders in Tech Law and Innovation Awards, recently described building out the company's compliance arm and the daily chaos that comes with practicing law in the tech industry.

The Recorder: What's your proudest professional achievement of the past year and why?

Lobato: Building an incredible in-house legal and compliance team. As a company in the cannabis space, we have a lot of novel complex commercial, corporate, insurance, regulatory, litigation and privacy issues that we face. The Eaze legal and compliance team works together like a well-oiled machine to tackle these issues.

What's your proudest personal achievement of the past year and why?

Teaching myself to fix my own garbage disposal from Youtube. True story.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to a woman starting out in tech law?

Get ready for a wild ride. No two days will be the same, and try to embrace that chaos, because that is where you will learn the most.

What concrete steps could be made to increase the number of women in tech law?

Mentorship. Take the time to mentor more junior lawyers who are looking to move out of the law firm or more traditional companies.
