The largest source of new California lawyers are residents of Los Angeles, according to information released by the state bar Sunday morning.

Of the 3,886 people who passed California's July 2019 bar exam, more than 500 people on the pass list have L.A. addresses. Another 319 live in San Francisco. Thirty-nine successful test-takers identified Washington, D.C., as their address, and another 21 listed New York for residency. Seven people who passed the exam identified Cambridge, Massachusetts, as their home.

The success of these test-takers and others helped bump the pass rate on the test to 50.1%, marking the first time in six years that a majority of applicants passed the notoriously difficult exam.

The test remains an international affair. Nine people who sat for the exam listed postal addresses in Korea. Nine more were from China and a dozen hailed from Canada.

Those who passed the exam and complete all the state bar's administrative requirements for new lawyers will be eligible to take the attorney's oath at ceremonies held later this year.

The bar will release information about law schools' individual pass rates in four to six weeks.
