New hires and promotions from across the California legal market.

The San Francisco office of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani grew with the addition of Robert M. Bodzin. Bodzin joins as a partner in the firm's commercial litigation practice group after leaving his previous job as a partner at Burnham Brown. He represents businesses and individuals in complex litigation cases involving matters such as class actions, shareholder litigation and products and general liability litigation.
Fisher & Phillips brought on Philip Smith as of counsel in San Francisco. Smith handles employment litigation matters related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage-and-hour matters and unfair competition. Before joining Fisher & Phillips, Smith was with Constangy Brooks, Smith & Prophete.
Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati announced its 2020 partner elections, to go into effect Jan. 1. Eleven of the 17 promotions are based in California. They include Alex Key, Lang Liu, Christina L. Poulsen, Melissa Rick, Jessica L. Snorgrass and Jaqueline Tokuda in Palo Alto; Lee A. Johnson and Natalie J. Morgan in San Diego; and Rich Mullen, Patrick J. Sandor and Lauren Gallo White in San Francisco.
Four of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman's six newly elected partners are based in California, with Emily K. Bias and Richard J. Evans based in Los Angeles and Deborah A. Carrillo and Laura C. Hurtado based in San Francisco. Bias focuses on real estate, tax and transactional matters, Evans focuses on finance and leasing transactions involving commercial aircraft, Carrillo focuses on corporate law, and Hurtado focuses on antitrust, unfair competition and commercial litigation.
David S. Hong, who focuses his practice on corporate law, and Jordan D. Segall, who focuses his practice on complex litigation and appeals, were elected to partnership positions at Munger, Tolles & Olson. Both attorneys are based in the firm's Los Angeles office.
Sidley Austin attorneys Stephen Abreu and Sally M. Wagner Partin, both based in the firm's San Francisco office, will become partners at the start of next year. Abreu is currently counsel in Sidley's technology and intellectual property transactions and global life sciences practices. Wagner Partin is currently an associate and focuses on capital markets, corporate governance and executive compensation, and mergers and acquisitions.
Madhu Pocha, a litigator with O'Melveny & Myers, is set to assume a partnership position within the firm Jan. 1 as part of a group of five partner promotions throughout the firm. Pocha practices in a range of areas, including antitrust, bankruptcy, entertainment, environmental, real estate and general commercial law.
Five Silicon Valley attorneys were promoted to partner at Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, effective Jan. 1. The new promotions are Jonathan J. Goodwin, a fund formation and tax lawyer; John H. Olson, a corporate and M&A lawyer; Jaime L. Narayan, a fund formation and tax lawyer; Michael N. Richman, an executive compensation and benefits lawyer; and Maggie White, a corporate and securities lawyer.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
