The Silicon Valley-based global chairman of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe's M&A and private equity practice has made a move to Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, bringing along another corporate partner in Texas.

Ed Batts joined Gibson Dunn's Palo Alto office and Charles "Chuck" Walker made the move in Houston Jan. 31. Both join the firm as partners, just four years after joining Orrick.

Gibson Dunn chairman and managing partner Ken Doran noted the pair's focus on technology companies and acquirers of high-tech intellectual property, in a press release about the move.

Batts said he does a some cross-border work and Gibson Dunn has a network of offices that will help with his practice. He said his client base consists of public companies in the technology space, and nontech companies investing in technology, but he declined to identify specific clients.

The new Gibson Dunn partner said he and Walker worked together at DLA Piper before they both moved to Orrick in 2016.

Walker was not immediately available for comment, but Mike Darden, the partner in charge of Gibson Dunn's Houston office, noted Walker's private equity experience.

"As a result, we see excellent synergies between their client base and the firm's client base in our Bay Area, Houston and Denver offices," Darden said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for Orrick said in a statement the firm thanks Batts and Walker for their contributions and wishes them well.

Matthew Gemello, a corporate partner in Orrick's Silicon Valley office who became head of the firm's global corporate practice on Jan. 1 is now also acting head of the M&A and private equity practice.

This pair's departure isn't the only one hitting Orrick this week. On Saturday, a four-lawyer mass tort group from Orrick moved to King & Spalding in New York. The litigation partners are Morton Dubin, John Ewald, Kristen Fournier and Kathy O'Connor.
