Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. promoted chief legal officer John F. Schultz to chief operating officer.

In his new role, Schultz still oversees the legal function, but he sheds the title of chief legal and administrative officer and corporate secretary for chief operating and legal officer, effective July 24, according to the company's 8-K form filed Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He will remain executive vice president.

As COO, Schultz now manages HPE's operations, legal and administrative affairs organization, which comprises of the legal department, ethics and compliance office, data office, global information technology, global real estate, global procurement, corporate affairs and global security. He still manages the transformation office, a cross-business team focused on the acceleration of the HPE's pivot to as-a-service company.

"John Schultz is a proven leader who has been instrumental in driving HPE's transformation as a company," a company spokesperson wrote in a statement to Corporate Counsel. "John's new title is a reflection of his capabilities and effectiveness in designing and overseeing critical initiatives in support of our transformation, improving operations to optimize our performance, and championing our culture and beliefs—John truly embraces the power of 'yes we can' and he executes and leads boldly."

Schultz has served as the San Jose, California-based company's top lawyer since December 2017. He served as executive vice president, general counsel and secretary at Hewlett Packard Co. from 2012 to 2015 when HP separated into two companies, HP Inc. and HPE, which houses the enterprise technology infrastructure, software and services businesses.

He first joined HP as deputy general counsel for litigation, investigations and global functions in 2008. Prior to HP, he was a litigation partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where he counted the company as one of his clients. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
