History teaches that a key step toward authoritarianism is for strongmen to co-opt the legal profession, intimidate dissent within it, and turn the law into a tool of state power. By contrast, when lawyers speak out early, as in 2007 with the Pakistan "lawyers' crusade" against President Pervez Musharraf, they can help turn the tide against a budding autocrat and compliant law officials.
