Criticism is mounting over $87.7 million in attorney fees proposed in a class action settlement over Apple iPhones, with attorneys general from a dozen states the latest to criticize what they called a “wildly excessive” fee request.

In a proposed amicus brief submitted Nov. 27, the attorneys general said the fee request, based on a percentage of the estimated $310 million value of the settlement, should instead equal the amount of the lodestar because the case was “unremarkable.” The lodestar—the 68,731 hours multiplied by the billing rates of the lawyers in the case—is $36.4 million.
