France’s data protection authority has levied multimillion-euro fines on Google and Amazon for placing advertising cookies on users’ computers without obtaining prior consent or providing adequate information.

The CNIL, or Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés, fined Google €100 million and Amazon €35 million for violations of France’s Data Protection Act in a ruling announced Thursday.
