Like U.S. attorneys across the country Tuesday, McGregor Scott, the top prosecutor in California's Eastern District, was asked by the Biden administration to submit his resignation. His last day will be Feb. 28. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert will serve as the acting U.S. attorney.

Scott has served two stints as U.S. attorney for two Republican presidents, once as a George W. Bush from 2003 and 2009 and again under President Donald Trump for the last three years. In between, he was a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe focusing on white-collar crime and corporate investigations.
