A retired Butte County judge’s self-described “tough love” approach to parties in her dependency court has drawn a public rebuke from the Commission on Judicial Performance.

Superior Court Judge Barbara Roberts, who stepped down from the court in October, displayed “harsh and discourteous” behavior toward parents with children in the court system, the commission said in announcing the public admonishment Thursday. Roberts also engaged in “undignified, discourteous and abusive” treatment of staff in one incident, commissioners said.
