The California state bar on Tuesday filed disciplinary charges against Tom Girardi, accusing the high-profile plaintiffs attorney of withholding hundreds of thousands of dollars in settlement money from victims.

Girardi, who was placed on inactive status on March 9 after a psychiatrist declared that the 81-year-old attorney has Alzheimer’s disease, is unable to practice law in California. A consumer alert posted Tuesday on Girardi’s license page warns that he is accused of “a major misappropriation of client funds.”
