Gov. Gavin Newsom, who already chose the first openly gay man to serve on California's Supreme Court, may be weighing another "first" to fill the impending vacancy created by Associate Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar's resignation.
California has never had a Latina serve on its highest court, and advocates see Cuéllar's departure as the time to change that.
