State lawmakers on Tuesday pressed Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration to consider eliminating a $300 civil assessment fee that generated almost $97 million for courts in the 2019-2020 fiscal year.

Newsom’s current budget proposal would halve the fee, which judges can impose on defendants in infraction, misdemeanor and felony cases when they fail to appear or don’t pay their fines.
