The group that could decide the future of the Commission on Judicial Performance met for the first time Tuesday, launching an 11-month sprint to recommend changes to the agency that disciplines California judges.

The Committee to Review the Operations and Structure of the Commission on Judicial Performance has a broad legislative mandate and a blank canvas. The group’s 14 members are charged with reviewing the CJP’s operations and deciding whether the 62-year-old agency is working well in its current form or needs a substantial overhaul. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon still has to appoint the 15th and final member.
