Civil rights groups and the Judicial Council on Wednesday agreed to pause litigation targeting civil assessments in the hope that the governor and Legislature will replace the $100 million the fees generate for courts annually.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, Bay Area Legal Aid and the firm Fenwick & West filed an amended complaint Monday in Alameda County Superior Court adding the Judicial Council as a defendant in an existing lawsuit challenging San Mateo County Superior Court’s practice of imposing $300 assessments on defendants who fail to appear in court or pay fines.
