Retired Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman intellectual property partner Richard L. Kirkpatrick died unexpectedly at his home in Orinda, California, on May 30. He was 68.

Kirkpatrick was a San Francisco-based trademark strategist and a prolific writer of publications and articles relating to his practice, including the treatise The Likelihood of Confusion. “When he gave a seminar, which he did at least twice a year, attendance would exceed 300 attorneys,” Pillsbury partner William Atkins wrote in an email from the firm.
