California courts will be able to continue using video proceedings in some criminal matters through 2023 under a budget deal between legislative leaders and the governor that was unveiled late Sunday.

Courts’ authority to conduct remote proceedings in criminal cases is currently scheduled to end on Friday when an emergency, pandemic-related rule expires. The new language, included in the negotiated state spending plan for the 2022-23 fiscal year, extends that authority until Jan. 1, 2024.
