California’s Supreme Court held Thursday that public schools cannot be sued for damages under the Unruh Civil Rights Act, sealing off a potentially powerful litigation avenue for plaintiffs.

In a unanimous opinion authored by Associate Justice Joshua Groban, the court said that a Contra Costa County student who alleges he was sexually assaulted by classmates and a school district employee can seek remedies through other statutes.
