Leaders of California’s state bar on Monday insisted that recent structural and policy changes at the lawyer-regulating agency should prevent a recurrence of the kind of internal corruption described in two scathing reports released Friday.

Ruben Duran, chair of the state bar’s board of trustees, and three top bar executives told reporters on a video call that the organization has instituted new rules to prevent the kinds of conflicts of interest that occurred when now-disbarred trial lawyer Tom Girardi showered then-agency employees with gifts, cash and trips on his private jet while the bar logged hundreds of ethics complaints against him.
