Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and its parent company Sempra Energy were hit with an environmental lawsuit on April 4 in California Superior Court for Los Angeles County. The suit was brought by Keosian Law on behalf of a group of 14 minors who live in or near Porter Ranch, California, the site of a 2015 natural gas leak from a reservoir owned and maintained by the defendants. According to the complaint, an ‘undisclosed,’ slow gas leak is ongoing at the site. The complaint alleges that the defendants were negligent in their construction and maintenance of the gas reservoir. It further alleges that although the leaked gas was known to be linked to cancer, birth defects and other adverse health effects, SoCalGas assured residents that the leak posed ‘no threat to public safety.’ Counsel have not yet appeared for the defendants. The case is 23STCV07408, Simonian v. Southern California Gas Company.
