Despite overwhelming opposition from California attorneys, state bar leaders on Thursday endorsed a proposal that would allow a small group of law school graduates to obtain their law licenses without passing the bar exam.

Bar trustees voted 6-2 to seek the California Supreme Court’s approval of a so-called portfolio bar exam pilot program. As envisioned, participants would complete as many as 1,000 hours of supervised legal work, submit examples of their work to graders and take at least one performance test.
